(EDIT) I felt like throwing my two cents in.

There's a lot of points of view on 'reference' vs 'swipe'. But I just wanted to point out for those who said "There's only so many poses..."

No. No there aren't just so many poses. The key thing to posing is remembering your camera isn't just one view. Run through a few ideas for a pose. If none of them are getting the idea across no matter how you ragdoll it, then roll your camera around. Maybe the angle of the shot just isn't selling it. Once more roll the camera.




And okay, say Deadlines are encroaching and for whatever reason you do see a pose that could work that someone else has drawn. Go the distance. Roll that camera around. Let's use the Cap Pose leaping (in one of those links there) Yeah it's an iconic pose and it can be used again, but seriously. Roll it around, make it your own.



Looking at a photo or even a previously drawn thing for inspiration works just fine. But do more with it than trace lines. Cuz tracing is laaame. Ideas are a dime a dozen. Those two sketches above took me a total of 5 minutes to come up with. 5 minutes can make the difference between "Wow, that's a freaking cool pose" and "Wow, what a biter..."
